First International Environment Forum for Basin Organizations | 26-28 November 2014 | Nairobi, Kenya

The First International Environment Forum for Basin Organizations convened in Nairobi, Kenya, from 26-28 November 2014.

 

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is organized the forum in cooperation with the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) to strengthen the transboundary governance of freshwater resources and ensure their sustainability. The forum discussed themes of water quality and ecosystem health, the water-energy-food nexus and adaptation to climate change, environmental laws and regulations, and institutional challenges.

On the first day of the forum Mr. Leszek Bialy (IHP of UNESCO) and Ms. Joana Akrofi (UNEP/DEWA) gave a presentation on the current status of TWAP and introduced the anticipated knowledge products, with emphasis on the freshwater components of TWAP: (1) Transboundary Lakes and Reservoirs; (2) Transboundary Aquifers and SIDS groundwater systems (3) Transboundary River Basins.

A high-level segment took place on 28 November with ministers, heads of river basin organizations and other guests on the way forward for the sustainable governance and management of freshwater basins.
